U.S. Port of Entry

Your International Gateway and U.S. Port of Entry
Falls International Airport carries the status of being an international airport
and serves as a U.S. Port of Entry for the U.S. Customs and Border Protection.  

Whether flying commercial or using general aviation services, Falls International Airport offers U.S. Port of Entry services 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week. A Customs and Border Patrol Officer is called to the site when an international flight is scheduled to arrive.  Please note advance notification is required.

Entering the USA

Pilot Must Have:

  • Pilot license - Private or above
  • Current medical certificate
  • Proof of citizenship

Aircraft Must Have:

  • Radio station license and operator's permit.
  • Transponder for flight in class A, B, and C airspace.

New Process to Clear the Border Required
Advance Passenger Information System (APIS) is a reporting system now in effect for passengers arriving or departing the United States by private aircraft.

Entering Canada

Pilot Must Have:

  • Pilot License - Private or above
  • Current medical certificate
  • Proof of citizenship

Aircraft Must Have:

  • Current airworthiness/registration certificates.
    Experimental aircraft must validate airworthiness certificate with Transport Canada prior to entry.
    Ferry flights must contact transport Canada prior to entry.
  • Radio station license and operator's permit.
    Two-way radio for flight in controlled airspace.
    Mode C for flight in class A, B, C and some class D airspace.
  • Operating limitations weight and valance documentation.
  • Public liability and private aircraft passengers liability insurance certificate.
    Owner's written permission for renters.

To Clear Border

  • File a flight plan to an approved airport of entry (AOE).  Arrive within established customs service hours to avoid callout charges.
  • Call 1.888.CANPASS (226.7277) with estimated time of arrival (ETA) between 1 and 72 hours before entering Canada.  Alternate number 604.363.0343.
  • Notify Customs if ETA changes significantly.  Notify Customs or RCMP is weather or emergency forces a change in destination.
  • Contact Customs at 1.888.CANPASS immediately upon arrival.
  • Proof of citizenship required for all persons on board.
  • Papers required for pets over 3 months.

Notable Differences

  • Visual flight rules (VFR) in controlled airspace: 3 mi. vis, 500 ft. vertically and 1 mi. horizontally from cloud at least 500 ft. AGL in control zones.
    Class C airspace: clearance prior to entry.
    Class F airspace: CYR-stay out; CYA-proceed with caution.
    Canadian VRF over the top rules differ from US VFR on top.
  • REFER TO CANADA FLIGHT SUPPLEMENT (CFS) FOR: Aerodrome directory, Mandatory and Aerodrome traffic Frequencies (MF/ATF), Customs AEOs, Intercept signals, and Search and Rescue signals.  Refer to Canadian Aviation Regulations Before flight in Canada.
